FENDER "STRATOCASTER " 1976

FENDER "STRATOCASTER " 1976 A superb example of Fender's legendary model. When C.B.S. took over they enlarged the headstock to enable a larger logo which although it was more in proportion than Leo's smaller headstock, was not received very favourably. However with it came a few good improvements not least of all, the trustrod adjustment plate on the headstock so you can do adjustments without having to remove all the strings. Also the micro adjuster to alter neck angle was introduced initially on the 3 bolt fixing and then on a 4 bolt fixing plate in 1980.

Although the 4 bolt was seen as an improvement the 3 bolt used steel inserts in the neck and was a lot stronger than given credit for. Another improvement over the early Strats. was a stronger tremelo unit with cast bridge sabbles instead of the earlier bent tin counterparts. Unfortunately the swamp ash used from about 1970 to 73 was changed to a heavy ash, not sure why, perhaps they were trying to compete with the Les Paul muscle builders. Anyway, it's not that heavy and its a loveley grain with a nice maple neck with the curved fingerboard and skunk stripe up the back.

I don't know how much the denser wood makes to the sound in reality, but the 70's Strats. had a very individual sound attributed mainly to the pick-upps used in this period. Most collectors want the sixties pre CBS models but as the prices have grown so prohibitive for most people, so, the sounds of the seventies has gained popularity and prices have risen dramatically over the last few years. From 75 on, the 5 way switch was fitted, another bonus. This one is also sporting a tortoise shell scratch plate and the Fender brass knob on the trem. arm. Altogether a fantastic guitar and a worthwhile investment.
